Today, Carl delivered our first produce of the season to the SDA food pantry in Old Town East. They were thrilled to see our gorgeous bags of lettuce, collards and peas and curious about the garlic scapes. Once they got a whiff they were sold and will pass on cooking information to their clients who pick up the food on Wednesday. Garlic Scapes, you ask? See the photo? The scapes are the top shoot of the garlic plant (the curly cue part). If left to their own devices they produce a seed pod. If cut in time, they are a culinary treat, honored by the Chinese and becoming more and more appreciated in this country. Visit your local farmer’s market now if you want to try them for yourself. Simply slice into small pieces and stir fry with other vegetables or tofu (or whatever) for a mild garlic-y addition to any dish.
In the meantime, the garden is bursting with green goodies. With the recent sun followed by all that rain–we had nearly 2 inches out here in the last 2 days–plants are growing in front of our eyes. I took pictures on Sunday, deleted them by mistake and when I took them again this morning the plants were visibly larger–some were doubled in size!
